Science Checklist – TERM THREE           Week TWO – 2014.
When you return to science, you must have completed the following.

1.
All work from Check list one completed!

2.
Periodic table Facts. 5 things you learned – your favourite one is put on to card to be displayed on our walls of elements. H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, and Al..must be completed by the time you return to science.

3.
Compounds and Mixtures – Make sure your notes are complete from class.
What is the difference between them?

4.
 Experiments 1-5 (?)
Flour and water, cornflour and water, food colouring in cold vs warm water, salt into water –
Describe each experiment – what did we do?
Hypothesize – what did you think would happen?
Predict – What did you wonder?

5.
Notes from Brainiac and Youtube clips about walking on custard. Explain what you saw and why it worked. FYI. The address for reference is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkS1ymQ73oc – or search Brainiac – John Tickle walks on custard
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-wxnID2q4A – or search “Can you walk on Water”

6.
 Complete Year 7 work book pg 89 – 94, and 97. Year 8 work book pages 85 to 87.
Ensure that all work from Checklist one work book activities have also been completed.

7.
Separating Mixtures – Filtration, evaporation, distillation, decanting, magnetizing, chromatography, centrifuging. Write into your book what each method of separating is and when you might use it.
Make sure you are familiar with methods of separation and you know when to use them.

7.
Vocabulary – as above in point 6, AND solution, solute, solvent, soluable, insoluable,
Non-newtonian liquid, chemical change, physical change.

Remember to bring a ruler, a pencil, a rubber, pens (YOUR OWN) and your homework book. Bring your workbooks and your exercise book to take good notes.

Chemistry Term 3 - What a gas

Welcome to Science in Term 3 - it's going to be an explosive term (Groan). We are looking at Chemistry. We will be learning about the first 20 elements on the Periodic table. You will need to know them off by heart (challenge accepted??) but you will also need to know what they are - what they do - where you find them and so on. I think you will find this clip by Bill Nye the Science Guy helpful...Write in your book the main points you learn while viewing the clip.

CSI - Activity

This is an in-class activity...but you need to be ready with the file on your device.
Do not complete it at home please.

To be able to take part in this activity, you need to do the following at home:
  1. Click on this link
  2. Then download the .zip file to your computer (this might not work on iPads)
  3. Once the file has been downloaded, you will need to extract the contents to a new folder
  4. To extract the contents, right click on the .zip file on your computer and choose the extract option
  5. Select destination folder and confirm extract
  6. Once extracted, open the folder and click on the file called: unq_crime_scene_v04.html
  7. You will then be able to take part in the investigation in class

Tour the Basics - follow the links to complete the tours

You will need to click on the links below to view the tour. You have learned how to take notes from these tours, so be sure to write clear, brief notes to show you understand what you are viewing.
Click on the link to take you to the right tour.
1. What is a gene?
2. What is a protein?
3. What is a chromosome?

Vocabulary Game.

Use this Quizlet game to help you learn your vocabulary for Week One in science.
Try the flash cards, listen to the audio, then test yourself. Use Scatter or Race to see what you know!
Can you get 100%? Click here for the game.

Post your results on the blog comments if you dare!!

Here are some interactive sites where you can see what it is like inside a cell. Our area of focus is the nucleus..but have a look around the other parts too - just for fun!
Click on the link then on each part of the cell to see what it does.

Write IN YOUR OWN WORDS  what the nucleus can do.
Do the same for the following link:
Click here to see what the inside of this cell looks like

What Chromosomes look like - Play the matching game

See if you can correctly match the pairs of Chromosomes to complete the 23 pairs. Look carefully to see the variations and match them up.
Click here to start the game

Record in your science book what your results were. What did you notice about the pairs?

Term Two - The journey of our cells and our DNA.

This term we will be looking at biology and focussing on cells and DNA. We are linking this to the work we have been doing around journeys and using science to help us understand how people, including our ancestors have journeyed to get to Aotearoa/New Zealand.

We will be carrying out some investigations on our own family to see if we can identify traits...Don't worry...it doesn't hurt much!
We will learn how to conduct a simple scientific investigation, account for variables, hypothesize and explain what we found.

Below is a link to a game that helps us to understand the process scientists took to identify the various parts inside a cell (organelles)
Click here to play the animation game about cells and organelles.

The game helps you understand why we have only recently been able to investigate and understand what happens inside our cells and the jobs that each cell carries out.

WRITE 5 FACTS THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN FROM THE GAME.

Volcanoes and their eruptions!

Have a look at this clip from our GNS site and write the key points into your science book. Include the name of the geologist who is talking and make a fact list. You should be able to write at least 5 good facts.

After you have watched this, have a look at this documentary about Mt St Helens in the US...it will help you to understand the benefits (yes, that's right) of volcanoes when we view the later video.
Click here for Mt St Helens

Now view the following Youtube clip that shows Mt St Helens 30 years later.
Your task is to note the changes and explain some of the benefits of a volcano.
Click here for Mt St Helens 30 years later
The documentary is quite long. You need to skip and skim. You are looking for key changes in the environment and how volcanoes may benefit the landscape when they erupt.

Books must be handed in by Wed 16th April.

Science Term One 2014 - Volcanology and Seismology

Welcome to Science in 2014.

We have been studying Seismology and Volcanology. We've made some amazing discoveries. As part of our homework we need to view a Youtube clip.
Unfortunately we can't embed it..you may have to click here

Geonet - New Zealand's earthquake and volcano monitor is a great site to visit too...You'll need to go here to complete your homework tasks. Click here for the website
